Disulfiram implant

Disulfiram was discovered in 1920s and is produced by various pharmaceutical companies under the trade names of Esperal, Antabuse, Teturam, Lidevin, Tetlong 250 and others.

Indications for use: Alcoholism and relapse prevention, chronic toxicity, ineffectiveness of other treatment methods.

Pharmacological action of these medicaments is based on the ability of Disulfiram to block the processing of alcohol in the body by inhibiting acetaldehyde dehydrogenase and causing symptoms of poisoning: flushing of the skin, accelerated heart rate, shortness of breath, and nausea. Thus in a controlled setting this treatment causes complete aversion to alcohol.
